Architects seek inspiration motive for guidance in design coherency for projects. Whether in materiality, sustainability, and/or functionality, the common result is a unique project that reflects that inspiration to the occupants. Often, the designs which are effective in doing this are regarded as successful. So it is an active pursuit for architects to communicate a theme of inspiration and improve the human experience for occupants.
For the artists’ whose work is stationed within Sculpture in the Wild (Lincoln, MT) are no different. This ever expanding arts program invites sculptors to, “Provide an environment for the creation of significant artworks, both permanent and temporary, inspired by the environmental and industrial heritage of the Blackfoot Valley while fostering an awareness and appreciation of the arts through community participation and education” -Mission Statement, Sculpture in the Wild.
A visit to this park provided a refreshing hands-on exploration of other artistic thinkers’ expressions. Each sculpture unique in an intent collectively evoke a coherency of wonder across the park.
The architect’s sketch, in it’s various forms, has been iconic imagery of the architectural practice. Availability of modern technology can create a threat to this foundational way of designing as efficiency and communication is biased to digital media. However, sketching remains a vital tool for architects. It not only activates an under strained portion of the mind, but also requires a unique area of intention. The park outing concluded with exercising this area of the mind to capture the inspiration of the sculptures’ and ignite inspiration for our own design thinking.
